History Jacobs & Co. was founded by Henry Jacobs in 1845 as a store selling dry goods, and by the time the store was opened, the company was known for its dry goods, clothing, and furniture. The store was renamed Associated Dry Goods Company's Central Avenue Store. In 1963, the store was designated as an "Artistic Treasure" by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The building has undergone several major renovations and expansions. By 1994, the store was run by Macy's. It closed in November of that year.
